Durban Fan Fest is Tops
06/07/10
According to the foreign press, Durban's beachfront Fan Fest is South Africa's best? but we knew that.
Durban's fan fest recorded attendance of 375,000 fans during the first six days of the tournament, more than any other Fan Fest in the world. At least 304,581 people visited Fen Fest venues in Cape Town, followed by Port Elizabeth with 146,974 and Sandton with 133,326.
Maybe it's because it's the first one to be right on the beach, maybe it's because Durban has been significantly warmer than the other host cities for the duration of the World Cup so far, but it could have something to do with the die-hard nature of Durban football fans.
Many fans had to be turned away when the Fan Fest reached capacity for all the Bafana Bafana games, meaning attendance could even have been significantly higher.
The highest attendance abroad was recorded in Paris, with more than 100,000 people watching the games from the Fan Fest there. FIFA has set up fan parks in Berlin, Rome, Paris, Vila Borghese (France) Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City and Sydney, in addition to the ones spread out over South Africa.
