Breathe Taking.
I recently visited the Artisan Gallery in Florida road, which I will admit I do not visit all that often being tucked away around the corner from Vida é cafe. But it is truly a hidden gem, that once found does not disappoint. There is a vast array of items they keep within the gallery, from ceramics, jewellery, to an occasional exhibition or two.
The work is made by local artists and has a wonderful homely feel on entering the space. I seem to be getting carried away and loosing my main reason for this piece. When visiting the gallery lately I came across a small group of photographic prints by Pippa Hetherington.
Here Hetherington has developed a series of photographs of rural KwaZulu Natal and the woman who live there. It has been said that her works are greatly influenced by her 'travels through Africa, the environment and social development of South Africa'.
The works stem from a collaboration with non-profit developments agency, Africa!Ignite, who 'supports rural and enterprise development' across KwaZulu-Natal. She produced this series of photographs entitled Burning Bright: Extraordinary Women of KwaZulu-Natal.
The show is an extraordinary display of the hardships some of these woman experience in their everyday life, as well as in most images the beauty that still remains within them.
The show is in till the end of May, and is defiantly worth a look, but if it is not your cup of tea there are many things that will keep every taste satisfied. Also on display at the gallery are fine art prints by Deborah Bell and Claudette Schreuders and ceramics by Clive Sithole.

Artisan Contemporary Gallery
This gallery, at the top of Florida Road in Morningside, looks absolutely tiny from the street. But once you get inside it holds a seemingly impossible amount of art, showing works by Durban and South African artists. The staff are friendly and helpful, and extremely knowledgeable.
