Doo Doo Doo and a Bottle of Rum
Starting Friday night off with a bottle of rum on a party bus (a hired minibus) can only be hazardous to say the least. Like gypsies, singing and drinking into the night, the trip to VMacs had me amped for a really great party.
The first band up was Fire Through The Window. They're fun like pre-teen sleepovers and as romantic as chick flick Thursdays. Their catchy beats and cheerful lyrics usually manage to get the crowd dancing. This time, however, although their performance was bouncy and energetic, they seemed to only mildly entertain the audience. It might have been due to the poor sound, or the small crowd. I usually enjoy shows at VMacs and have come to expect more.
Beginning to get bored, I opted to join other disinterested drunks hanging out in the parking lot. When I returned, Wrestlerish, had just started with their blend of country/folk/rock drenched in heartbreak and melancholy. I found this to be quite a curious juxtaposition next to FTTW's naïve optimism. At least the crowd seemed to be more enthusiastic and the sound had been fixed to some extent.
Their debut album, "The Rude Mechanical", which they were launching on the night, is sweet and sincere, and whilst it might just be a little too emotional at times for some (myself included), it is lyrically and melodically beautiful, and could probably be quite useful through post break-up retrospection.
By the time Spitmunky hit the stage, I was happy on rum and distracted by the hangers around looking for a different party to end the night with. Tentatively, we attached to the drunken dance of the moment, and headed back into night, slightly disappointed by a peculiar party that could have gone better.
